    Drunk drivers...

This can only happen in Sweden, I think!

Late one night, a police patrol discovered a car in a ditch with a drunk woman inside. The breathalyser test showed 2,24 per mille alcohol in the blood. In the car they also found a can of wine.

The woman later claimed that she had been with a friend on that particular evening  and only had one or - at the most -  two glasses of wine before she drove home. She denied that she had been driving drunk and said that she started drinking from the can after she had driven into the ditch...

Even but the district court thought that the high alcohol level indicated that she had started drinking earlier, the case was dismissed as they could not prove that she was lying... !

The other day, I read about a man who has been convicted for drink-driving 48 times!! The police says that they do everything to stop him but they can't keep him locked in forever. He has no driving licence or car but that does not stop him. If he can't borrow a car, he steals one. Last weekend they took him twice...

This country must be heaven for all kind of criminals, as even if they do get convicted, the penalties are usually way too lenient! (Here the prisoners have their own trade union even!) And one thing I strongly oppose to, is the short penalties that people driving drunk get!

But with this last incident, maybe we won't get so many drunk drivers convicted any more? I mean... just make sure to have some alcohol in your car if you are out driving drunk ! And in case a police stops you, just turn off the engine and start drinking and they won't be able to prove that you drank before you drove! It is insane! It truly is...

  • So sad but very similar here as past posts have indicated and future posts will emphasize even more.

Many murder while drunk driving and get off lightly with the excuse that they were so drunk, they didn't know what they were doing.

Sorry, but we live in really bad times when law means absolutely nothing to the criminals.

  • Agree with skip I'm afraid! Too any people with out any respect for others

  • Drink driving makes me very angry - it seems to be regarded as a lesser crime than burglary yet it is one of the most lethal crimes that exist.

    • Our laws are too soft on them! It's the same with rapists - in too many cases the man has got away with it just because the woman was drunk and he "did not realize" that she was saying No, or she was dressed too sexy etc...

  • Simple solution: make it an offense punishable by a mandatory prison sentence for a person to be in charge of a vehicle with an opened container alcohol in the passenger compartment, whether the vehicle is moving or not.

    • yes that sounds good. But as I said, going to prison doesn't seem too scaring for some people as the prisons here are very nice and they are soon out shortly anyway.

  • Drink drivers ...yes there's a subject...the law over here has the matter pretty well sown up. for a start if you have the keys on you and your in a car then you are done for being drunk in charge of a vehicle..

say you went out and decided that you had had to much drink and fell asleep in the car...you are arrested if over the limit..basically if you are in control of the car whether driving or not you are nicked....may seem a bit harsh but the law on drink driving has evolved to cover all the loopholes that have been used over the years....you name an excuse then someone has tried it

saying that the example you gave is an interesting one as she was in charge ..her defence would be that the vehicle could not be driven, but we would have taken a blood sample and done a count back which would show if she was over the limit before the crash .

oh if you refuse a sample you are treated in the courts as if you had driven whilst drunk.

even if you are unconscious in hospital we will take a sample of blood and when you are awake we will ask if you are willing to have the sample analysed ..if you refuse you are done for failing to provide and you get the same sentence as if you had driven drunk.

the drink drive Law over here is one of the strongest in the world and very hard to get out of at court....however drink drive is still very common..and the same as you we have multiple offenders...how ever if you are banned for drink drive you are disqualified from driving so if you drive again you will be prosecuted for drink drive and disqualified driving and no insurance and as you have no insurance we confiscate your car and if you drive disqualified more than twice you are likely to go to gaol.

  • I know of someone who crashed a car into someone's front room. She ran to her boss' house which was nearby and he filled her full of brandy so she would get off with the drink-driving bit. Poor isn't it. It happened years ago though so I'd like to think the breathalyser technology is better.

At least she didn't hurt anyone. Actually, no, that's not true. She killed a goldfish that was in the front room of the house she drove into.

So she's in big trouble karma-wise anyway.

  • The legal system should be tougher on criminals who persist in putting innocent people in harm's way.

  • Good post and good comments Lisa.

  • From June to 27 August 2008 polish policemen stopped 2246 drivers...
It is not comparable with anything in other countries in Europe. Law in Poland is very severe, every driver with higher than allowed level of alcohol has to go to court, but it doesn't detersb people from drinking and driving.
I think in Sweden is a bit better with it :)

  • A few days ago, we had a lectue in school "Don't drink and drive". They told us that "everytime you meet a cab, so many times everyday do you meet a drunken driver on the roads". That's like every 8:th car! Pretty horrible.

  • I agree...we tend to be too lenient with drunk drivers. In Canada we have three separate charges...1. Driving while over .08; 2. Impaired driving (alcohol and or drugs and 3. Care and control of a motor vehicle while intoxicated. Now, if you have one prior conviction then the Crown (prosecutor) has the right to file a notice of intent to seek a higher penalty. However, except in very unusual circumstances this is not done on a regular basis.

In the past, I may be supervising someone while on Probation and they re-offend....then get placed on a second court order. All a bit ludicrous. If you look at our current stats for impaired drivers, (especially in Alberta where I live) the stats continue to go up-wards. People just are not getting the message.
